Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education
The history of the Academy dates back to December 2, 1809 when the Institute of the Railway engineers’ corps was founded in St. Petersburg by the manifesto of Emperor Alexander I. The Institute trained versatile railway engineers in the field of designing, building and operation of all road and hydro-technical constructions.
In 1934 a branch of the Leningrad (then the name of St. Petersburg) Railway Institute appeared in Moscow on the basis of which the Moscow Institute of the Engineers of Water Transport was founded in 1980.
Finally the Academy was officially established in 1989 in the result of merging the Moscow Institute of the Engineers of Water Transport, the Moscow River College and secondary vocational (shipping) school No 202. It was the first unique national project, which combined within the framework of one educational institution three subsequent levels of continuous training: secondary vocational (support), operational and managerial.
Today the Academy is a large educational and scientific complex which structurally consists of 30 departments of 5 faculties, a college and 3 branches (in the towns of Velikiy Ustug, Ufa, Rybinsk).
It includes a center for research in water transport, various scientific and educational laboratories, modern computer classes, sophisticated scientific and training simulators, numerous workshops and up-to-date sports facilities.
The Academy focuses on training specialists for inland waterways and maritime industry.
It comprises the following faculties:

Classes are conducted in five teaching blocks.
The Academy’s branches have over 189 class-rooms and laboratories
To train navigators and engineers the following simulators and complexes are available: GMDSS, “Ship’s Navigation”, “ Navigating Bridge Integrated with Ship Power Plant”, Transport Safety”, “Safeguarding of Ships and Port Facilities”, “Radar Navigational Instruments and Systems”, “MARIBS-B”, SARP and ECS “Morlot”, Virtual Ship, a shore-based training simulator centre on the safety of navigation.
The Academy takes an active part in international activities which embrace the following areas:
Joint research
The scientists of “Ship power plants and automation” department together with their counterparts from Norway and Germany conduct research in the field of reducing the toxicity of exhaust gas from ship diesels and the prospects of using natural gas on ships.
The scientists of the Academy in collaboration with the scientists from the Technical University of Bremerhaven (Germany) tested the marine engine of “MAC” company for the analyses of nitrogen oxides emission. A joint patent on the method of nitrogen oxides evaluation in the test conditions on board ship was proposed.
Participation in the work of international organizations, international conferences, seminars and symposiums
In April 2015 the Academy joined the International Association «Education in Inland Navigation» (EDINNA ).
MSAWT Vice-Rector on Science and Research Oleg Solyakov made a presentation about the Academy at the General Assembly of EDINNA.
